WeedRead: Making the Most of Cereal Forages—Triticale, Hay Barley & Mixes
Cereal Forages
Cereal forages are a great option to add to your feeding program; there are many different options to get that protein in the cold winter months.
Triticale
Triticale has been a popular option over the past few years. With the newer awnless varieties and the option of spring and winter varieties, there is no way to go wrong.
Surge – This is an awnless spring variety that produces large tonnage and excellent feed quality. By adding forage peas, the options for protein and feed quality are endless.
Showtime – coming this fall, Showtime Triticale is a solid winter variety that will withstand the harsh Montana winters. It is an awnless winter triticale with huge yield potential, excellent feed values, and protein.
Hay Barley and Forage Mixes
Vaquero – Introduced in 2020, Vaquero has been a solid hay barley over the past few years. Introduced in 202o, Vaquero has been a great replacement for Stockford. Over the years, we have seen slightly better tonnage totals to get that extra feed for the winter months.
Forage Mixes – Forage mixes are a great option to add diversity to your feed program. From peas, oats, and barley to triticale and peas, these are always great options to add.
